Woman with neck pain in HoustonWork should never be literally a pain in the neck. Talk to us about neck pain treatment today!

In today’s economy, a large percentage of Houston-area employees spend a great deal of time at a computer desk typing, scrolling, and using a mouse. These repetitive tasks can wreak havoc on the musculoskeletal system, particularly if one side of the body is in use more than the other.

If you are experiencing tension or pain in your upper back, neck or wrists, it may be time to take inventory of your workplace habits and posture. After following these 3 tips, you will soon see reduced pain and inflammation – and may even begin to look forward to the long hours at work!

Tips for a Pain-Free Workweek

The following is a list of tips and tricks to help you keep your bones and muscles happy during long hours at the computer:

1. Posture

Avoid leaning to one side or the other while at your desk. As well, be sure both feet are flat on the floor and make every effort to keep your back straight and flush with the back of your desk chair. Lastly, keep your shoulders down and relaxed while typing to avoid knots and tension in the neck and upper back.

2. Stand and Walk Around

In addition to proper posture, it is vital to get up and get moving. First, make a commitment to stand up at least once per hour – even if to take a brisk walk around the office. If you can, stand to do some of your work during the day, as this will increase circulation and ensure equal weight distribution.

3. Adjust the Monitor

One of the most straining positions for the head and neck occurs when a computer monitor is too low or too high, resulting in an unnatural head position. The weight of the adult head can be 10 pounds or more, and holding the head at the wrong angle can create unnecessary strain on the neck muscles.

Along these same lines, lift your head up when looking at or scrolling on a smart-phone. For the same reasons, an unnatural head position can create painful strain and tension on the neck.
