Acupuncture
Acupuncture is part of the oriental system of healing which has been in existence for some 5000 years. It is a treatment based on traditional Chinese medicine. By stimulating certain points on the body by inserting special needles, research has shown normalization of physiologic function and modification of pain or disharmony. These points are located on twelve channels called “meridians”. The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These enegy channels, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up in others. The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points; the acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions at the dams, and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the body's internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities, and in the circulation of their energy through the meridians.
The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release endogenous opiates in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These neurochemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.
In our Office;
We use a combined approach starting with an Electric Meridian Imaging (EMI) test to evaluate the balance of the meridian system, and then select points on the meridians to bring balance back into the meridian system. All needles used are single use sterile needles that are disposed of after a single use. No needles are ever re-used. This avoids the possibility of infection. In addition to treating the traditional approach in balancing acupuncture meridians, we also use formula points to increase the potential response in special uses.
What Happens During Your Appointment?
A licensed practioner possessing a “Doctorate” degree in the “Healing arts”, who utilizes scientific and technologically advanced acupuncture procedures in addition to ancient traditional Chinese medicine, will perform a complete health history as well as a physical examination. After assessing the results of your history and examination and determining a course of treatment, the doctor will insert very fine, flexible needles into specific points (acupoints). The needles are pre-sterilized and disposable to eliminate the transmission of communicable diseases or infection. Patients will feel very little sensation or a feeling of heaviness or fullness or no pain at all.

How many treatments will I need?
The condition been treated varies depending on the type of injury, age, past medical history, lifestyle, and current pain status. Most acute conditions are resolved in a short series of treaments spaced close together. Usually 1-4 treatments, where chronic conditions, could take 12 treatments to achieve long term pain relief. The results of treatment usually have a accumulative effect. If you make the commitment to get treated regularly in the initial phases, the Acupuncture will have a more significant effect and you will need less treatment in the long term. However, chronic conditions may need occassional "booster" treatments to keep pain in check.
For those patients referring not to use needles, there is a needleless method using "micro current" technology which is highly effective, and painless. Special trigger/acupoint probes are used over acupuncture points to treat painful conditions. This method is especially helpful in treating children.
