Checking Your Child's Posture

Written By Bear Creek Chiropractic Clinic on August 8, 2018

Today’s high-tech world means lots of screen time — and lugging laptops and heavy devices to school in oversized backpacks, even in elementary school.

All of this slouching, hunching, and weight-bearing affects your child’s posture — and health. Incorrect body alignment from using smart devices can negatively impact digestion, respiration, posture, and other elements of a child’s health. In addition, wearing a top-heavy, oversized backpack can contribute to wear and tear on the spine that can set your child up for pain and discomfort later in life.

Our over-reliance on technology and the trend of kids wearing heavy backpacks incorrectly make it urgently important to check your child’s posture. Doing so on a regular basis will ensure their spinal curve remains in a natural, health-promoting “S” curve.

Pediatric Posture — What You Can Do to Help

Backpacks are a common contributor to poor pediatric posture and spinal problems. If your child must wear a backpack, make sure it is sized correctly for their age, weight, and height. A backpack should not be heavier than 10 percent of your child’s weight. That means if your child weighs 100 pounds, he should not carry a backpack heavier than 10 pounds.

A backpack that is overfilled can cause shifts in spinal shape, which can lead to health problems as the child matures. Also, make sure your child wears his or her backpack high between the shoulders, not hanging at the waistline.

The next thing to do to help your child’s posture is to limit “screen time.” Time spent using tech devices like smartphones and tablets contribute to poor posture. If your child uses a computer, ensure the screen is at the correct height. Your child’s neck should be straight, not held behind or forward of the torso.

An ergonomic chair will also help prevent the hunching and slouching that is typical with computer and video game use.
